'World's Largest Pride' In Sao Paulo Draws Over Three Million Spectators

We're only a few days into Pride month, but over three million LGBTQ supporters took to São Paulo on Sunday (June 3) for the 22nd installment of their Pride parade, and the affair earned the title as the world's largest Pride parade ever.

The festivities, which filled more than 10 city blocks with 18 sound trucks, attracted all kinds of spectators for this year's theme: "Power for the LGBT [Community]: Our Vote, Our Voice." It served as a nod for some social reform ahead of Brazil's nationwide election in October. Organizers have called upon lawmakers and candidates to voice their support for LGBT equality. In case you didn't know, despite the legalization of same-sex marriage, Brazil doesn't provide LGBT discrimination protection.

Claudia Regina, president of São Paulo's official Pride group, echoed those sentiments in her official statement on the parade. "Talking about the elections during the LGBT Pride Parade in São Paulo is a valuable way of communicating to all LGBT people about the importance of choosing their candidates," she said ahead of the march. "Through our struggle, we have already achieved some rights… but we cannot risk losing what we have already achieved simply through political ignorance. LGBT people from all over Brazil need to pay attention to the 2018 Elections. Together, we can all promote a more tolerant world with respect and less LGBTophobia."
