Five people are dead in a shooting at an elementary school in a small Northern California community. Law enforcement says the shooter was killed during the attack by officers and is among the dead. Several students were also shot and wounded.
“At this point the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets,” Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told reporters at a press conference. “I know of at least three deaths.”
Johnston says reports of shots fired at the Rancho Tehama School began coming in shortly before 9 am. The elementary school is located north of Sacramento in a rural area. Law enforcement says the shooting occurred before school started, however, there were already students on campus.
Johnston told the media that multiple students have been airlifted and the school has been cleared. An exact number of those hurt has not been released.
Authorities say at least seven scenes are being investigated at the school and about 100 law enforcement personnel were on-scene. A witness to the shooting said she saw someone drive through the gate at the elementary school and fire dozens of shots.
